P. Z. Myers draws attention to this nice scan from The Watchtower, a fine publication seeking to draw impressionable, innocent youth away from the siren calls of Satan. Cop a squiz at the scenario in number 2.
A well-intentioned teacher urges you to pursue higher education at a university.
Depravity!
"... what will you do? Will you simply give in... "Can a man rake together fire in his bosom and yet his very garments not be burned.""
Forsooth. Touch not the unclean thing, gentle Witnesses. Flee the demon-haunted halls of higher education. "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."
Crap. If only Herbie had cribbed something else from the JWs besides "Time is short! Don't pursue a worldly education! A whole world deceived!"

Aaaarrrrggggghh higher education! When I've got the money, I don't have the time. When I've got the time, I don't have the money.

I ran across this same Watchtower statement here.
ReplyDeleteAlso relevant to this discussion is a comment made in Mrs. Barbara Anderson's testimony of life under the Watchtower.
"Starting in 1992, it was [Lloyd] Barry who was responsible for the Society’s more compliant attitude toward young Witnesses pursuing higher education, which stance changed in November 2005." ('Unforgettable People' section).
This may explain the recent meltdown by JW/tennis star Serena Williams.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, she joined sister Venus in attending a fashion design school in the Miami area -- and then look at what happened at the U.S. Open. :-(
